The UN Women Legal Office is responsible for providing high-quality legal advice and support to UN Women`s Executive Director, senior management, headquarters and country offices on a wide range of multidisciplinary legal issues related to the interpretation and application of international, public, private and administrative law in the following areas: Multi-ethnic Project on Domestic Violence (MEDOVI) – representing foreign-born people Victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in immigration are significant. Foreign-born victims face unique challenges due to cultural differences and language barriers. Often, a victim`s citizenship sponsor is the victim`s perpetrator, and immigration status is used as another screening tool. MEDOVI uses the provisions of the Violence Against Women Act to help victims obtain immigration status, allowing them to live and work legally in the United States. Legal Momentum was founded in 1970 and is the nation`s oldest civil rights organization working to advance the rights of women and girls. Based in New York City, Legal Momentum is a leader in developing legal, legislative and educational strategies to ensure women`s economic and personal security. Legislative advocacy – taking a stand on laws affecting women`s legal rights – Judicare reviews cases and mediates low-income clients involved in controversial custody and family law cases in Baltimore County with experienced lawyers who offer their services free of charge to clients. A litigant in a controversial family law case who cannot afford to pay a lawyer is clearly at a disadvantage. Judicare connects these clients who need representation with lawyers who are willing to provide low-cost legal services to help them protect their rights.

Legal advice to UN Women on human resources management issues: The Women`s Law Center`s efforts to promote justice and equity for women operate on two levels. We help individuals protect their legal rights by providing information about the law and legal representation. In addition, we engage in advocacy and policy issues to achieve systemic change. CLAS Project – Launched in 2016, CLAS Lawyer represents existing and new clients who are victims of domestic violence in legal matters, including custody, divorce, landlord/tenant matters, and more.

CLAS also represents victims of domestic violence at protection order hearings when conflicts arise for other WLC offices or jurisdictions. By providing these comprehensive legal services, WLC prevents our clients from being re-traumatized and ensures increased stability in victims` family life and economic status, thereby reducing the likelihood that they will return to their abusers. Under the supervision of the Chief Legal Officer, the Legal Officer advises UN Women management, headquarters, regional, subregional and country offices, as required.
